New Delhi, 29th July. Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution & New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, has inaugurated a new initiative to offer tomatoes at a subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kg. The tomatoes, procured from three centers, will be distributed via vans operated by the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited (NCCF) in Delhi, Noida, and Gurgaon.
During the launch, Joshi stated that this measure is aimed at stabilizing the rapidly rising prices of tomatoes in major urban areas. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Department of Consumer Affairs to control food prices and support consumers amidst fluctuating market conditions.
Joshi clarified that the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF), established under the Narendra Modi government to manage essential commodity prices, was not utilized for this initiative. Instead, the tomatoes were procured directly from wholesale mandis, bypassing intermediary costs to keep retail prices low.
The NCCF’s intervention is expected to mitigate price surges and prevent excessive profit margins at the retail level. Initially, the subsidised tomatoes will be available at several key locations, including Rajiv Chowk Metro, Patel Chowk Metro, and Nehru Place, among others. Plans are underway to expand the distribution network to further enhance consumer access.
The move reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to address consumer concerns and maintain market stability amid rising food prices.
