Kolkata, 5th August.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose made headlines on Sunday with candid remarks about his relationship with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and ongoing disputes with her administration. Speaking to PTI, Bose expressed respect for Banerjee as an individual and in their professional capacity but criticized her political persona.

Bose described his relationship with Banerjee in three distinct aspects: “One is the individual Mamata Banerjee, with whom I have a very good relationship. Second is the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with whom I have professional relations. Third is the politician Mamata Banerjee, that’s not my cup of tea,” he said. Bose recounted conflicts during election periods when he felt that Banerjee’s political statements affected their professional interactions, leading him to file a defamation suit against her.

Despite the tension, Bose emphasized that his respect for Banerjee as a person remains intact. “Otherwise, Mamata Banerjee is my friend. The Chief Minister is my colleague and I am not a politician,” he noted.

Bose also addressed recent controversies, including allegations of sexual harassment against him by a Raj Bhavan employee. An internal inquiry has dismissed these charges, and Bose has initiated legal action against Banerjee and other Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders for defamation. A Calcutta High Court interim order has barred them from making further defamatory statements.

Regarding legislative matters, Bose responded to accusations from the West Bengal government that he has been withholding assent on eight bills. He clarified that no bills are pending with his office, except for six reserved for presidential consideration, one awaiting discussion for clarifications, and one currently sub-judice.

The Governor has also raised concerns about the state’s financial management, labeling it as “tardy” and “poor.” He has requested the state government provide a White Paper on finances for a comprehensive review. “There is a meltdown, rather, if I may say so, in Bengal,” Bose said. He added that depending on the White Paper’s findings, he will consider appropriate constitutional actions.

Bose emphasized his commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring the well-being of West Bengal’s citizens. He indicated that while he has not yet decided on specific actions, he is prepared to take necessary steps as outlined by the Constitution if required.
