PM Modi’s Mauritius Visit Paves Way for Stronger Economic and Developmental Ties

Port Louis— Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius witnessed the signing of eight key agreements and the inauguration of major developmental projects, further strengthening the India-Mauritius partnership.

Among the agreements, a significant one between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank of Mauritius will establish a framework for promoting local currencies — the Indian Rupee (INR) and the Mauritian Rupee (MUR) — in cross-border transactions. Additionally, a credit facility agreement was signed between the Government of Mauritius and the State Bank of India to support development initiatives.

In a push for economic cooperation, India and Mauritius signed an MoU to enhance collaboration in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Another MoU between the National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG) and Mauritius’ Ministry of Public Service aims to strengthen administrative reforms.

Maritime security cooperation received a boost with a technical agreement for sharing White Shipping Information between the Indian Navy and the Government of Mauritius. Further, an MoU between India’s INCOIS and Mauritius’ Department of Continental Shelf, Maritime Zones Administration and Exploration will enhance ocean information services. In the fight against financial crimes, India’s Directorate of Enforcement (ED) and Mauritius’ Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) inked an MoU to curb illicit financial activities.

Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation, the Mauritius Area Health Centre at Cap Malheureux, and 20 High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs). In a gesture of maritime cooperation, India handed over a Navigational Chart of St. Brandon Island, prepared following a hydrographic survey by the Indian Naval Ship.

Additionally, PM Modi announced India’s support for constructing a new Parliament Building in Mauritius and the launch of Phase-II of HICDPs to further enhance development cooperation.
