New Delhi, 12th Jan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Sonamarg in Jammu & Kashmir on 13th January 2025, where he will inaugurate the highly anticipated Sonamarg Tunnel at around 11:45 AM. The tunnel, a major infrastructure project, is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, with far-reaching implications for the region’s defense, tourism, and economy.

The Sonamarg Tunnel, approximately 12 kilometers in length, has been constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 2,700 crore. The project includes the main Sonamarg tunnel, an egress tunnel, and associated approach roads. At an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, this tunnel will ensure all-weather access to the strategically important Ladakh region by bypassing landslide-prone and avalanche-hit areas.

The tunnel will also bolster tourism, transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination and encouraging winter tourism and adventure sports. It is expected to improve local livelihoods by making the region more accessible and attractive to tourists throughout the year.

In conjunction with the Zojila Tunnel, which is expected to be completed by 2028, the Sonamarg Tunnel will reduce the route length from 49 kilometers to 43 kilometers, while increasing vehicle speed from 30 km/h to 70 km/h. This enhanced road network will provide seamless connectivity along NH-1, directly linking Srinagar Valley to Ladakh, thereby boosting defense logistics and fostering economic growth in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also meet the construction workers who have worked in challenging conditions to complete this vital project, recognizing their dedication and contribution to this remarkable engineering achievement.
