In a significant move aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 17th installment of approximately ₹20,000 crore under the PM-KISAN scheme in Varanasi on June 18, 2024. This announcement was made by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan during a press conference today.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Varanasi will also feature the granting of certificates to over 30,000 Self Help Groups (SHGs) as Krishi Sakhis, marking a milestone in the government’s efforts to empower rural women in agriculture. The event is being organized by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

The event will be graced by several esteemed dignitaries, including the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath, and various other state ministers.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for prioritizing agriculture, highlighting its pivotal role in India’s economy. “Agriculture is the foundation of the Indian economy, and most employment opportunities are generated through this sector,” he said. Chouhan underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to farmers’ welfare, noting that the 17th installment of the Kisan Samman Nidhi, amounting to over ₹20,000 crore, will benefit more than 9.26 crore farmers.

Launched on February 24, 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme provides financial assistance of ₹6,000 annually to land-holding farmers, distributed in three equal installments. To date, over ₹3.04 lakh crore has been disbursed to more than 11 crore farmers nationwide. With the upcoming release, the total disbursement will exceed ₹3.24 lakh crore.

Chouhan also highlighted the broader impact of the PM’s initiatives, including the Krishi Sakhi program. This initiative aims to empower women in agriculture by certifying them as para-extension workers. As of now, over 34,000 Krishi Sakhis have been certified, with more to follow.

The program on June 18 will see widespread participation, with Union Ministers visiting 50 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) to engage with farmers and raise awareness about various government schemes. Around 2.5 crore farmers are expected to join the event across the country, with live broadcasts on DD, DD Kisan, My Gov, YouTube, Facebook, and more than five lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs).

Chouhan emphasized the significant role of women in agriculture and the government’s commitment to providing financial security and affordable fertilizers to farmers. He urged farmers to participate in the event through various media to connect directly with the Prime Minister.

The press conference was also attended by Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shri Manoj Ahuja, and Secretary, DARE Shri Himanshu Pathak.
