New Delhi, 10th August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to release 109 new high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified crop varieties on August 11, 2024, at 11 AM, during an event at the India Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi.
The Prime Minister will also engage in discussions with farmers and scientists on this occasion.
These 109 crop varieties span 61 different types, including 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops. The field crops encompass a wide range of seeds, including cereals such as millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, fiber crops, and other potential crops. Meanwhile, the horticultural varieties include fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tuber crops, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants.
Prime Minister Modi has consistently championed sustainable farming practices and the adoption of climate-resilient techniques. He has emphasized the importance of biofortified crops in addressing malnutrition by integrating them with government programs such as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and Anganwadi services.
This initiative aims to boost farmers’ incomes and open new entrepreneurial opportunities in the agricultural sector. The release of these 109 high-yielding varieties is another significant step in this direction.
