New Delhi, 15th March.
India, a net importer of edible oil, is taking significant strides towards achieving self-sufficiency in this crucial sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With 57% of edible oil currently being imported, costing the nation approximately 20.56 billion USD in FOREX, the need for self-reliance has never been more pressing.

During his visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to self-reliance in edible oil production.

Emphasizing the importance of the Mission Palm Oil, a special campaign targeting the Northeast, the Prime Minister inaugurated the first oil mill under this mission, heralding a new era of self-sufficiency. “Mission Palm Oil will make India Aatmanirbhar in the edible oil sector and boost the income of farmers,” stated Prime Minister Modi, expressing gratitude to farmers for embracing palm cultivation.

The Government of India launched the National Mission for Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) in August 2021, aiming to escalate oil palm cultivation and elevate Crude Palm Oil production to 11.20 lakh tonnes by 2025-26. Currently operational in 15 states, covering 21.75 lakh hectares, the mission has established 111 nurseries and 12 seed gardens to support area expansion.

To incentivize farmers, the government has revised the viability price of oil palm and offers a viability gap payment (VGP) to hedge against price volatility. Additionally, farmers receive Rs. 70,000 per hectare for planting material and management, Rs. 2,90,000 for purchasing harvesting tools, and Rs. 25 lakh for establishing custom hiring centers (CHC).

Processing companies are also setting up One-Stop Centers for oil palm farmers, providing inputs, advisory services, and facilitating the collection of produce. This holistic approach reflects the government’s commitment to economic growth, farmer empowerment, and sustainability in edible oil production.

The National Mission for Edible Oils – Oil Palm stands as a testament to India’s dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in this critical sector, fostering a sustainable and resilient ecosystem for the nation’s future.
