New Delhi, 23rd August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with a distinguished group of Polish Indologists. The notable attendees included Prof. Maria Christopher Byrski, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and Professor Emeritus at the University of Warsaw.
Prof. Byrski, who served as Poland’s Ambassador to India from 1993 to 1996, was honored with the Padma Shri Award by the President of India in March 2022.
Also present were Prof. Monika Browarczyk, Head of the Department of Asian Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan. Prof. Browarczyk was awarded the Vishwa Hindi Samman in February 2023 during the 12th Vishwa Hindi Sammelan held in Fiji. Prof. Halina Marlewicz, Head of the Institute of Oriental Studies at Jagiellonian University, Krakow, known for her work in Indian philosophy, and Prof.
Danuta Stasik, former Head of the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Warsaw, were also in attendance. Additionally, Prof. Przemyslaw Szurek, Head of Indian Studies at the University of Wroclaw, participated in the meeting.
Prime Minister Modi praised the scholars for their deep interest in Indian subjects and highlighted their significant contributions to strengthening cultural ties between India and Poland.
He acknowledged that their academic research has played a crucial role in promoting mutual understanding and noted the long-standing interest in Indology in Poland, which dates back to the 19th century.
