New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern over the devastating earthquakes that struck Myanmar and Thailand earlier today. He assured that India stands ready to extend all possible assistance to the affected nations.
According to reports, a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar’s Sagaing region in the early hours of Friday, causing significant tremors across parts of Thailand, Bangladesh, and eastern India. The quake was followed by several aftershocks, triggering panic among residents and causing damage to buildings and infrastructure. Authorities are assessing the extent of the destruction, and rescue operations are underway.
Thailand also reported structural damage in several provinces, particularly in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where tremors were felt strongly. Emergency response teams have been deployed in both countries, and local authorities are coordinating relief efforts.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand, writing:
“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been instructed to remain in close contact with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand to facilitate potential relief efforts. India has a history of extending humanitarian aid and disaster relief to neighboring countries during crises, and officials are closely monitoring the situation.
