New Delhi, 29th Jan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences and wished for the speedy recovery of around 30 women injured in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh fair grounds earlier today. The stampede occurred after crowds broke through barricades, leading to a chaotic situation near the Triveni Sangam ghat, where millions of pilgrims gathered for the auspicious Mauni Amavasya.

PM Modi assured that the local administration is providing assistance to those affected and has been in constant communication with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The Prime Minister has spoken to the Chief Minister four times since the incident, offering full support from the Centre.

The stampede took place just a kilometre away from the Sangam, where around 10 crore pilgrims are expected to take a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. In response, the Akharas canceled their processions, and the holy dip was deferred following the incident.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath confirmed that some individuals were seriously injured but assured the public that the situation is now under control. He urged pilgrims to take a dip at the nearest ghat and advised the elderly, children, and those with respiratory issues to exercise caution. “All ghats are Ganga ghats, and all will receive the same divine blessings,” Adityanath emphasized.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister JP Nadda, and Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel also reached out to CM Adityanath to stay updated on the situation.

The Maha Kumbh’s Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya is the most significant ritual of the event. This year, the occasion holds added spiritual significance due to a rare celestial alignment known as ‘Triveni Yog,’ which occurs once every 144 years.

Over the past 17 days, the Maha Kumbh 2025 has seen over 15 crore pilgrims take the holy dip. On Tuesday alone, more than 4.80 crore devotees participated in the snan, surpassing even the numbers seen during Makar Sankranti. The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26.
