Manikrao Gavit, a former union minister and Congress leader, died of old age on Saturday at a hospital in Nashik, Maharashtra.
Gavit died at the age of 87, leaving behind his daughter, former MLA Nirmala Gavit, and son, Bharat.
He was a nine-term Lok Sabha member who represented the tribal-dominated Nandurbar constituency from 1980 to 2009 before losing the election in 2014.
Gavit’s son Bharat joined the BJP after the Congress denied him a ticket in 2019, while Nirmala, a two-time Congress MLA from Igatpuri, joined the Shiv Sena and lost her seat.
Gavit served in the Manmohan Singh government as Union Minister of State for Home in 2004 and as Minister of State for Social Justice in 2013.
