Senior BJP Leader Shyamdev Rai Chaudhary, 85, Passes Away in Varanasi

Senior BJP leader and seven-time MLA from Varanasi South, Shyamdev Rai Chaudhary, passed away at the age of 85 on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. Chaudhary, affectionately known as ‘Dada’, had been admitted to a private hospital in Mahmoorganj after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

BJP Mahanagar president Vidyasagar Rai confirmed the news, saying Chaudhary’s health had been declining over the past few days. Chaudhary served as an MLA from Varanasi South for seven consecutive terms from 1989 to 2017 and was also the Protem Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2007 and 2012.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over Chaudhary’s passing, describing it as an irreparable loss for both Kashi and the political world. In a post on X, the PM praised Chaudhary for his dedication to public service and his contribution to the development of Kashi. “We all fondly called him ‘Dada’. His death is an irreparable loss,” Modi said, extending his condolences to the bereaved family.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also mourned the loss, saying the death of the senior politician was a great loss to the BJP family. “I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant salvation to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family,” Adityanath wrote on X.

Other political leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress state president Ajay Rai, also expressed their condolences. Yadav called Chaudhary’s death “heart-rending,” while Rai described it as an “irreparable loss.”

Shyamdev Rai Chaudhary was a stalwart in Uttar Pradesh politics and a beloved figure in Varanasi. His passing has left a void in the local political landscape and beyond.
