New Delhi, 13th Sept. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the unanimous passing of the Delhi Declaration at the conclusion of the 2nd Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation, held from 11th to 12th September in New Delhi. This high-level event, organized by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), saw participation from delegates of 29 countries and eight international organizations, including ICAO, which marked its 80th anniversary during the conference.
The two-day summit gathered civil aviation ministers, heads of aviation authorities, and key stakeholders to discuss challenges and growth opportunities for the region’s aviation sector. A major outcome of the event was the adoption of the Delhi Declaration, a framework to enhance regional cooperation, address emerging challenges, and promote sustainable growth in civil aviation.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s strides in aviation, particularly its efforts towards gender inclusivity, stating, “In India, 15% of pilots are women, surpassing the global average of 5%. We aim to increase this number with further initiatives.” He also emphasized India’s shift from being “aviation exclusive” to “aviation inclusive,” with a focus on connecting people, culture, and prosperity through the sector.
The PM also proposed the idea of an “International Buddhist Circuit” to connect holy places related to Lord Buddha across Asia, potentially benefiting the aviation sector and regional economies.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, in his address, lauded India’s leadership in global aviation, noting the country’s target of achieving 350-400 airports by 2047. He also highlighted the planting of 80,000 saplings to mark ICAO’s 80 years and India’s pivotal role in distributing vaccines across the Asia-Pacific during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ICAO President Salvatore, along with other dignitaries, stressed the importance of maintaining safety, security, and sustainability in global aviation. The conference concluded with ICAO’s presentation on supporting Pacific Small Island Developing States in addressing aviation challenges.
The adoption of the Delhi Declaration sets a path for regional aviation development, as India continues to lead efforts in making the sector more inclusive, safe, and sustainable.
