New Delhi, 25th Dec. Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has emerged as a crucial lifeline for the poor and vulnerable populations in India, particularly when it comes to ensuring timely access to life-saving cancer treatment. With delays in initiating cancer treatment often leading to disease progression, worsened health outcomes, and increased complications, the government’s health insurance program aims to address these barriers effectively.
Cancer, a costly and complex disease, often becomes an unaffordable burden for low-income families. Previously, many poor households were forced to forgo or delay treatment due to financial constraints, leading to advanced stages of the disease and exacerbating healthcare costs. However, under AB-PMJAY, more than 25% of the medical procedures covered include oncology treatments, ensuring that financial limitations no longer prevent access to care.
As the world’s largest government-funded health insurance scheme, AB-PMJAY offers up to ₹5 lakh in free healthcare benefits per family every year. This initiative is especially significant for cancer patients, who otherwise face prohibitive treatment costs. The scheme provides free treatment at designated hospitals, reducing the economic burden on families, particularly in rural and remote areas where access to quality healthcare can be limited.
By offering a comprehensive network of authorized hospitals, AB-PMJAY allows even those from distant regions to receive high-quality cancer care. This not only improves health outcomes by ensuring timely interventions but also aims to make cancer treatment accessible and affordable for millions of Indians.
