Srinagar, 30th Oct. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Para urged the government on Wednesday to abolish the reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir, citing concerns over the quality and competence of institutions in the region.
In a post on the social media platform X, Para highlighted the recent results of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) 2023, which revealed that only 40 percent of selected candidates were chosen based on “open merit.” This is particularly alarming considering that over 70 percent of the state’s population falls into the unreserved category.
His comments came in light of the candidates selected for the Jammu and Kashmir Combined Competitive Examination 2023. According to the selection list, out of 71 candidates called for the medical exam, a significant 42 belonged to reserved categories. Para criticized this trend, stating, “The government must scrap this unjust policy against merit and ensure reservations reflect true population proportions.”
As the president of the party’s youth wing and an MLA from Pulwama, Para emphasized that “J&K’s youth deserves inclusion, not exclusion,” adding that the impact of the reservation policy extends beyond job opportunities. He said that such policies jeopardize the long-term quality and competence of institutions across the region, calling for a reevaluation of the current system to better serve the population’s needs.
