New Delhi, 6th Feb. Both houses of parliament were adjourned till 2 p.m. on Monday, amid loud protests and sloganeering from opposition parties calling for a debate and investigation into allegations of fraud against the Adani Group.

Opposition parties, after a meeting at the chamber of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, in the parliament building on Monday, decided to raise the demand for discussion on the report by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research on Adani Group companies, and a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe in both the houses, sources said.

The opposition parties have claimed that the recent meltdown in Adani Group shares is a scam involving common people’s money, citing investments in them by the public sector LIC and SBI. The Adani group has insisted that it is in compliance with all laws and disclosure requirements.

The parties are demanding a discussion about the risk to Indian investors posed by the drop in Adani Group shares following fraud allegations. They have also requested an investigation by a parliamentary panel or a committee appointed by the Supreme Court.

Assuring members “not to make baseless charges,” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla rejected their requests, and Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chair Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected all resolutions from the opposition, stating that they were “not in order.”
