New Delhi, 25th Jan. On the eve of Republic Day, the President of India announced the recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards 2025. Recognized as one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Awards celebrate exceptional contributions in various disciplines, including art, social work, public affairs, science, engineering, medicine, literature, education, sports, and civil services.
This year, a total of 139 awards have been approved, comprising 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri. The awardees include 23 women, 10 individuals of foreign origin or from the NRI/PIO/OCI category, and 13 posthumous honorees, representing a diverse spectrum of excellence and dedication.
Highlights of Padma Vibhushan 2025
The Padma Vibhushan, awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, has been conferred upon seven luminaries this year.
- Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy (Telangana) was honored for his groundbreaking work in medicine, particularly in the field of gastroenterology.
- Justice (Retd.) Jagdish Singh Khehar (Chandigarh) received the award for his contributions to public affairs, including his tenure as the 44th Chief Justice of India.
- Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia (Gujarat) was recognized for her exceptional contributions to classical dance.
- Lakshminarayana Subramaniam (Karnataka), the legendary violinist, was awarded for his contributions to art and music.
- T. Vasudevan Nair (Kerala, posthumous) was honored for his unparalleled contributions to literature and education.
- Osamu Suzuki (Japan, posthumous) was acknowledged for his transformative influence on the automobile industry.
- Sharda Sinha (Bihar, posthumous), the celebrated folk singer, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to art and culture.
Key Padma Bhushan Recipients
The Padma Bhushan, awarded for distinguished service of a high order, was conferred upon 19 individuals, including:
- A Surya Prakash (Karnataka) for his role in literature and education, particularly in journalism.
- Jatin Goswami (Assam) for his contributions to classical dance.
- Nandamuri Balakrishna (Andhra Pradesh), a prominent actor and cultural figure.
- Sadhvi Ritambhara (Uttar Pradesh) for her impactful work in social service.
- R G Chandramogan (Tamil Nadu) for his contributions to trade and industry, particularly in the dairy sector.
- Vinod Dham (USA), often referred to as the “Father of the Pentium Chip,” for his innovations in science and engineering.
- Shekhar Kapur (Maharashtra), the acclaimed filmmaker, for his contributions to cinema and storytelling.
- R. Sreejesh (Kerala), India’s former hockey goalkeeper, for his exceptional contributions to sports.
Padma Shri: Recognizing Grassroots and Global Contributions
The Padma Shri, awarded for distinguished service in any field, included 113 honorees, showcasing a rich diversity of contributions.
- Arijit Singh (West Bengal), the celebrated playback singer, was recognized for his contributions to music.
- Mamata Shankar (West Bengal), a renowned dancer and actor, was honored for her work in art.
- Ashwini Bhide Deshpande (Maharashtra) received recognition for her contributions to Indian classical music.
- Harvinder Singh (Haryana), India’s first para archer to win gold at the Paralympics, was acknowledged for his achievements in sports.
- C S Vaidyanathan (Delhi) was recognized for his work in public affairs, particularly in legal advocacy.
- Stephen Knapp (USA) was honored for his contributions to literature and education.
- Vinayak Lohani (West Bengal) was acknowledged for his impactful social work, especially in the field of child education.
- Ajay V Bhatt (USA), a pioneer in developing the USB technology, was honored for his work in science and engineering.
- Manda Krishna Madiga (Telangana) was recognized for his advocacy for social justice.
- Sheikha Shaikha Ali Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (Kuwait) received the award for her contributions to medicine.
The awards will be presented by the President of India in a ceremonial function at Rashtrapati Bhawan, traditionally held in March or April. These honors reflect the diversity and excellence of contributions across India and abroad, celebrating achievements that inspire national pride and progress.
