Padma Awards 2023: Mulayam, SM Krishna, Zakir Hussain, Kumar Mangalam Birla & Others Among Recipients

New Delhi, 25th Jan. Mulayam Singh, the patriarch of the Samajwadi Party, architect Balkrishna Doshi, and West Bengal doctor Dilip Mahalanabis will be honored posthumously with the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award, announced on the eve of Republic Day.
According to a citation, during the 1971 Bangladesh War, Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis popularized the use of Oral Rehydration Solution while serving at a refugee camp.
Mr. Yadav, a socialist leader who died last year, founded the Samajwadi Party and served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times. Padma Vibhushan recipients include tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and veteran politician S.M. Krishna, who left the Congress in 2017 to join the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka. Mr. Krishna (90) announced his retirement from active politics earlier this month.
106 Padma awards have been approved by India’s President. There are six Padma Vibhushans, nine Padma Bhushans, and 91 Padma Shri awards on the list. Nineteen of the awardees are women, and seven were honored posthumously.
Among the honorees are people from poll-bound Tripura, Nagaland, and Karnataka.
Padma Bhushan was awarded to industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and Sudha Murty, chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. Mr. Krishna and Kannada novelist S.L. Bhyrappa are among the eight people chosen from poll-bound Karnataka for this year’s awards.
Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, 90, is credited with creating Brand Bengaluru. He has held various positions including External Affairs Minister, Maharashtra Governor, and Chief Minister of Karnataka. Mr. Bhyrappa, one of Kannada’s most celebrated and prolific novelists, has had his work translated into nearly every Indian language other than English.
Padma Shri was awarded to Ramkuiwangbe Newme (75), a Naga social worker from Dima Hasao in Assam who dedicated his life to the conservation and preservation of the Heraka religion.
M.M. Keeravani, who recently won a Golden Globe, has also been awarded the Padma Shri.
Ratan Chandra Kar (66), a retired government doctor from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands who has worked with the Jarawa tribes, received the Padma Shri award. Mr. Kar treated the Jarawas during the 1999 measles epidemic, bringing them back from the brink of extinction and contributing to their population increase from 76 to 270.
“Congratulations to those who have been conferred the Padma Awards,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. India values their diverse contributions to the nation as well as their efforts to improve our growth trajectory.”
Mahalanabis, who promoted the worldwide use of Oral Rehydration Solution, was among the 26 unsung heroes named for the prestigious awards.
Hirabai Lobi, a Siddi tribal social worker from Gujarat, and war veteran Munishwar Chander Dawar, who has been treating underprivileged people in Madhya Pradesh, were both awarded the Padma Shri.
V.P. Appukuttan Poduval, a 99-year-old freedom fighter who participated in the Quit India movement, snake catchers Vadivel Gopal and Masi Sadaiyan of the Irula Tribe in Tamil Nadu, and 98-year-old organic farmer Tula Ram Upreti from Sikkim were among those chosen for the Padma Shri.
The President bestows these honors at ceremonial functions held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan each year, usually in March or April.
