Prayagraj, 15th Feb. Over 50 crore devotees have taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh, making it the largest congregation in human history for any religious, cultural, or social event, the Uttar Pradesh government said on Friday.

The grand Hindu pilgrimage, held every 12 years, began on January 13 and will continue until February 26 on the banks of the Triveni Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

The state government highlighted that the footfall at Maha Kumbh has exceeded the population of every country except India and China. According to official figures, over 92 lakh devotees took a dip on Friday alone, pushing the total attendance past 50 crore as of February 14.

Despite a tragic stampede on January 29, which claimed 30 lives and injured 60 others, the religious gathering continues to witness an overwhelming influx of pilgrims from across India and abroad. The government had initially estimated a turnout of 40–45 crore but has now revised the numbers due to the increasing participation.

On Mauni Amavasya, observed on January 29, a record-breaking 8 crore devotees took a ritual bath at the Sangam in a single day. The government noted that the number of devotees at Maha Kumbh surpasses the populations of major countries like the United States, Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, and Pakistan.

Security measures have been intensified to manage the vast crowd and ensure the safety of pilgrims. Authorities continue to monitor the event, which remains one of the most significant spiritual gatherings in the world.
