Mumbai, 31st August. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis sharply slammed the opposition on Friday for what he termed as “pettiness” regarding the collapse of the Shivaji statue in Sindhudurg. This criticism follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent apology to the people of Maharashtra for the incident.
Addressing the media, Fadnavis condemned the opposition’s focus on political gains from the mishap. “The opposition is only seeing the politics in the incident; they cannot see beyond it. The Prime Minister has openly apologized to all the devotees of Shivaji. Politicizing this matter is a mark of the opposition’s pettiness. We do not need the Congress’s certificate,” he asserted.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi, during a gathering in Malvan, Palghar district, expressed regret for the incident. “Those who consider Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as their deity and have been deeply hurt, I bow my head and apologize to them. Our values are different. For us, nothing is bigger than our deity,” Modi said.
The 35-foot-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which was inaugurated by Modi in December last year, collapsed on August 26. The incident has sparked significant debate and criticism, with the opposition accusing the ruling government of negligence.
