New Delhi, 16th July. In a boost to the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh, OBC leader Om Prakash Rajbhar has decided to ally with the party and join the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah.
Shah welcomed the leader of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) to the NDA on Sunday by tweeting a photo of their meeting.
His entry will strengthen the NDA in Uttar Pradesh and further boost its efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the welfare of the poor and deprived, the senior BJP leader said.
In a tweet, Rajbhar said, “The BJP and the SBSP have come together. They will fight together for social justice, national security, good governance, the deprived, exploited, farmers, poor, Dalits, youth and women, and to empower every poor section”.
Rajbhar, who holds significant influence in his Rajbhar community in eastern Uttar Pradesh, is now scheduled to attend the NDA meeting on July 18 in what is considered as a show of strength by the ruling alliance in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Rajbhar’s affiliation with the Samajwadi Party was seen as a major cause for the BJP’s underwhelming performance in ‘poorvanchal’ during the 2022 assembly elections.
He had previously been a BJP ally, but had left the party ahead of the assembly elections.
The BJP’s decision to bring him into the NDA shows the party’s micro-efforts to enhance its influence throughout the state, which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
Another ‘Poorvanchal’ OBC politician, Dara Singh Chauhan, decided to resign from his position as a Samajwadi Party MLA on Saturday. This move is thought to be a part of a bigger BJP effort to increase its numbers.
Chauhan formerly worked for the BJP before joining the SP ahead of the 2022 assembly elections.
