NRI from Thane Cheated of ₹1 Lakh by Fraudsters Claiming to Be Gas Company Officials

Thane, 13th Jan. A man originally from Maharashtra’s Thane, now residing in New Jersey, USA, has been defrauded of ₹99,900 by scammers posing as officials of a piped cooking gas supply company, police said on Monday.

The victim, who owns a house in Thane, received calls from two different numbers on December 20, 2024. The callers, claiming to represent the “MNGL” gas service provider, alleged that he had unpaid bills, an official from Naupada police station stated.

Believing the fraudsters, the victim transferred the amount through various payment modes. He later discovered the deception and informed his relatives in Thane, who subsequently lodged a complaint.

The Naupada police have registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (cheating) and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

No arrests have been made so far, and an investigation is underway to identify the culprits.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of such calls to avoid falling prey to similar scams.
