“Not Our Business”: Vance Rules Out US Role in India-Pakistan Conflict

Washington, 9th May: Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the United States has made it clear that it will not intervene militarily in the conflict, calling it “fundamentally none of our business.” In an interview on Thursday, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that while Washington is deeply concerned about any potential conflict between nuclear-armed nations, it cannot control sovereign countries like India and Pakistan.

“America can’t tell the Indians to lay down their arms. We can’t tell the Pakistanis to lay down their arms,” Vance said, adding that the US will pursue diplomatic channels and continue to urge both sides to de-escalate. He emphasized that the goal is to prevent the current hostilities from spiraling into a broader regional or nuclear conflict.

Vance cited US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who have both publicly called for immediate de-escalation. “What we can do is try to encourage these folks to de-escalate a little bit. But we’re not going to get involved in the middle of a war,” Vance reiterated.

Tensions between India and Pakistan surged following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people—mostly tourists. During their first official visit to India, Vance, his wife Usha Vance, and their three children were in the country when the attack occurred.

Two weeks later, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting terror infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. On Thursday night, the Indian military repelled Pakistani missile and drone strikes aimed at military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur.

In a statement following the counteroffensive, India’s Defence Ministry said the country is “fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people.”

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate phone conversations with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Rubio extended condolences for the Pahalgam attack and reiterated US support for India’s fight against terrorism. He also urged Pakistan to take concrete steps to curb support for terrorist groups.
