The South Korean military claimed that North Korea fired multiple artillery shots between 8:07 a.m. and 11:03 a.m. (local time) on Sunday (June 12). According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the alleged projectiles were fired from multiple rocket launchers.
The South Korean military claims appear to be another show of force just one day after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his country’s arms buildup in a party meeting. He vowed to strengthen the military might of the reclusive nation.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated, without providing any details, which it had decided to issue a statement late in the evening because the shots were of a traditional type, with relatively short range and low altitude.
Concerns were raised around the world a week ago when the DPRK launched eight short-range ballistic missiles eastward from four different locations. Since the new South Korean government took office on May 10, the DPRK has launched four projectiles.
According to a government-affiliated think tank in Seoul, North Korea spent up to $650 million this year on missile tests. According to the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, Kim’s regime spent between $400 and $650 million developing and testing the 33 missiles fired this year.
