A day after being sworn in as Punjab chief minister, AAP’s Bhagwant Mann plans to make a “big decision in the interest of the state” — a move “no one in Punjab’s history” has made before.

“A significant decision in the best interests of Punjab will be made today.”

No one in Punjab’s history has ever made such a decision. “I’ll be announcing it soon,” Mann said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab made two major promises: 300 units of free electricity per month for every household and Rs 1,000 in financial assistance for every woman.

In a ceremony at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mann on Wednesday.

Mann was greeted enthusiastically by employees standing around and on balconies. He also gave them a wave. According to an official release, the CM received a guard of honour from the 82nd Battalion of the Punjab Police at the Civil Secretariat.

Mann was greeted at his office at the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh by Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari and Director General of Police V K Bhawra, as well as senior IAS officers, with bouquets.

Mann said in a short but clear message to his officers and employees after taking office that the people of the state have given him a historic mandate and that his government will work for pro-people policies.

Mann also promised that officers and employees would work together to improve people’s lives, according to the release.
