New Delhi, 10th August. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has confirmed that no natural earthquake was recorded in Wayanad or its adjoining areas on August 9, 2024.
According to NCS, the rumbling sounds and tremors reported by media sources were not due to an earthquake but were likely caused by shifting rock masses from recent landslides.
The shifting of unstable rock masses can generate subterranean acoustic vibrations due to frictional energy. This energy can travel through sub-surface cracks and fractures, creating rumbling sounds and ground vibrations in landslide-prone zones.
MoES has reassured the public that there is no cause for panic, as the National Seismological Network did not detect any earthquake activity in the region on the specified date.
