New Delhi, 14th August. In view of the widespread protests by doctors demanding improved security measures after the brutal rape and murder of a colleague in Kolkata, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory to medical colleges across the country. The directive, issued under the guidance of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, outlines a series of mandatory safety protocols to be implemented in medical institutions.
The advisory mandates that all medical colleges enhance security infrastructure by installing well-lit corridors and campus areas, CCTV surveillance, and ensuring adequate safety measures at outpatient departments (OPD), wards, casualty areas, and hostels. The NMC emphasized the need for comprehensive safety policies that cover all sensitive and open areas within the campus and residential quarters.
In addition, the advisory requires that any incidents of violence against medical students be promptly investigated by college management and reported to the police. Colleges are instructed to submit a detailed action report to the NMC within 48 hours of any such incident.
The advisory comes in the wake of a tragic event at PG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered in a seminar hall on Thursday. A civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Health Minister JP Nadda has criticized the West Bengal government for allegedly attempting to suppress the case and has supported the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
