Nitish Kumar Resigns as Bihar CM, Splits Alliance with BJP

Patna, 9th August. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned on Tuesday splitting his alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Earlier in the day, Kumar met with JD(U) leaders to discuss his future political moves. He then asked Governor Phagu Chauhan for some time.

Kumar arrived at Raj Bhavan around 4 p.m. and informed Governor Phagu Chauhan of his decision to resign as state chief minister.

Earlier today, at the JD(U) meeting, all MLAs and MPs supported Chief Minister Kumar’s decision and extended their support for him. They also stated that they will continue to back Kumar’s decision.

Outside the chief minister’s residence, police officers were seen in large numbers.

Many JD(U) legislators told Chief Minister Kumar in today’s meeting, according to sources, that the alliance with the BJP had weakened them since 2020.

Without naming Chirag Paswan, legislators are said to have recalled the former Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief’s actions during the 2020 state assembly elections, while warning the CM that if they were not vigilant, it would be bad for the party.

Paswan had fielded rebel BJP candidates in all seats fought by the JD(U) in the 2020 polls, in what some have alleged was part of a plot of the BJP to wedge its way into the ruling coalition in the state.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan opposition alliance was held here today at former Chief Minister Rabri Devi’s residence, with participation from leaders of the CPI-ML and the Congress, both of which are members of the state’s Opposition ‘Mahagathbandhan’ alliance.

According to sources, Rashtriya Janata Dal MLAs, MLCs, and Rajya Sabha MPs authorised party leader Tejashwi Yadav to make a decision and expressed their support for him following the meeting. According to sources, MLAs from the Congress and Left parties have also expressed their support for Yadav.

Sources said that RJD party supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav is closely monitoring the situation, but Tejashwi Yadav is handling everything.

Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya took to Twitter to clarify the state’s impending political change. “Get ready for the coronation, lantern holder,” she tweeted in Hindi, followed by a ‘victory’ emoticon.

The state’s RJD-led opposition has stated that it will welcome any re-alignment in Bihar’s ruling coalition that does not include the BJP.

Ajit Sharma, leader of the Congress Bihar legislature party, said ahead of the RJD meeting today, “If Nitish Kumar comes, we’ll welcome him. If he comes we will support him. A meeting of Mahagathbandhan is being held. We should make a decision to support (him) by considering Nitish Kumar as the CM but we’ll be able to tell you only after the meeting.”

On Tuesday, Bihar BJP leaders also met at the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Tarkishore Prasad in Patna.
