Lucknow, 17th August. The Nishad Party, an ally of the BJP-led NDA, has declared its intention to field candidates in the upcoming by-elections for the Majhawan and Katehari Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. This announcement was made following the party’s ninth Foundation Day celebrations in Lucknow on Friday.
Sanjay Nishad, the party president and Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Minister, confirmed that the Nishad Party will again contest these seats under its own symbol, as it did in the 2022 Assembly elections. Nishad urged party workers to support the NDA and ensure victories across all contested seats.
However, BJP state spokesperson Harish Chandra Srivastava indicated that the NDA leadership typically makes decisions regarding seat allocations and candidate selections for its allies. As of now, no official announcements have been made by the NDA leadership regarding the by-election candidates.
By-elections are anticipated for 10 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, though the Election Commission has not yet set the dates. Political preparations are already underway.
The Nishad Party’s announcement is noteworthy since the BJP has yet to finalize candidates or seat allocations for its allies.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, the Nishad Party’s Awadhesh Kumar contested Katehari but was defeated by Samajwadi Party’s Lalji Verma, who has since vacated the seat. In Majhawan, Nishad Party’s Vinod Kumar Bind won but has since been elected as BJP MP from Bhadohi, leaving the seat vacant.
Sanjay Nishad said that the party was established to address the concerns of the Majhwar and fishing communities. He reiterated ongoing discussions with central and state governments about reservation issues and announced plans for a statewide signature campaign on the matter.
