NIA Gets 90-day Extension to File Charge Sheet in Amravati Pharmacist Murder Case

GG News Bureau

Mumbai, 21st Sept. A special court here on Tuesday granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) a 90-day extension to file a charge sheet in the murder of pharmacist Umesh Kolhe in Maharashtra’s Amravati city.

Kolhe was assassinated on June 21 after posting on social media in support of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammad.

According to the investigation agency, ten people have so far been detained in connection with the case, while four have fled.

The NIA had requested more time to file the charge sheet, stating that it would take another 90 days to complete the chain of events (that led to the murder) with cogent and reliable evidence.

The accused’s attorney had objected to the NIA’s plea.

After hearing both sides, special judge A K Lahoti granted the NIA 90 days to file the charge sheet.

The NIA told the court that the accused were misleading the investigation agency, and as a result, they had to record statements from 20 witnesses last week, which will take time to corroborate.

The accused have the right to remain silent, but they cannot mislead the investigation, according to the agency.

In response to the NIA’s request, the accused’s lawyer, Ali Kaashif Khan, stated that the investigation agency cannot put words into the accused’s mouth and expect the desired response.

He claimed that the NIA had failed to state a reason for requesting an extension to file the charge sheet in its plea.
