NIA Court Extends 12-Day Custody of 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana

Mumbai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Delhi on Monday extended the custody of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, by 12 days. Rana was produced before Special Judge Chander Jit Singh at the NIA court, as confirmed by the agency.

According to reports by ANI, the NIA’s legal team was present during the proceedings. The extension comes as investigative agencies continue to question Rana regarding his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks that claimed over 160 lives.

Earlier, officials from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch interrogated Rana at the NIA office in Delhi. Sources revealed that he was questioned for nearly eight hours but remained uncooperative, giving evasive responses throughout the session.

The Delhi Patiala House Court had previously dismissed Rana’s plea seeking permission to communicate with his family via phone call. His legal counsel, Piyush Sachdeva, argued that as a foreign national, Rana has the fundamental right to speak with his family. However, the NIA opposed the request, citing the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation and concerns that he might divulge critical information.

Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian national, was extradited from the United States to India earlier this month. He faces multiple serious charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), including conspiracy, terrorism, forgery, and waging war against the nation.
