Kanker, 29th Sept. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out extensive searches across Chhattisgarh’s Kanker region on Saturday in connection with the brutal killing of Indian Army personnel by Maoists. According to an official statement, the NIA teams targeted multiple locations belonging to 11 suspects in villages including Useli, Gumjhir, Badetevda, Umarkumta, and Amabeda.
During the operation, authorities seized several items, including air guns, mobile phones, printers, a laptop, a hard disk, digital video recorders (DVRs), a motorcycle, incriminating documents related to Maoist activities, and Rs 66,500 in cash.
The case pertains to the fatal attack on Motiram Achala, who was shot dead by unknown cadres of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) near Murga Bazar village in Useli, under the Amabeda police station, in February 2023. At the time of the incident, Achala was on leave from his military posting and was attending a local fair with his elder brother, Birajhu Ram Achala, and friends.
According to the NIA, following the murder, the assailants fled into the nearby jungle while shouting slogans such as “Lal Salam Jindabad.”
As the investigation progressed, the names of suspected supporters and overground workers (OGWs) of the CPI (Maoist) emerged, prompting Saturday’s searches. The NIA, which took over the case from local police in March of this year, is intensifying its efforts to dismantle the Maoist ecosystem in the region.
