NFR Boosts Level Crossing Safety with CCTV Surveillance

Guwahati – The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is significantly enhancing passenger safety and streamlining train operations by implementing robust surveillance measures at Level Crossing (LC) gates. The railway has installed high-resolution CCTV cameras at 28 key LC gates across its divisions, according to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR.

The installations include 4 CCTV cameras in Alipurduar Division, 17 in Lumding Division, and 7 in Tinsukia Division. This initiative aims to proactively manage gate operations and prevent potential hazards such as unauthorized access or vehicle obstructions, thereby mitigating risks associated with train movements at these crossings.

“This initiative is part of NFR’s broader strategy to reduce human error, minimise incidents at crossings and ensure secure, uninterrupted train movements,” stated Sharma. He further highlighted that the CCTV coverage at major intersections will enhance vigilance, expedite emergency responses, and support data-driven safety management.

In addition to LC gates, NFR has also strengthened security at Railway Protection Force (RPF) posts by installing 9 Internet Protocol-based CCTV cameras across Katihar, Alipurduar, Lumding, and Tinsukia divisions. Furthermore, 6 cameras have been installed at IBS (Intermediate Block Signalling) huts in the Hasimara – Kalchini section of Alipurduar Division to bolster surveillance at remote signalling locations.

As part of its infrastructure modernization efforts, NFR has implemented an interlocking system at crucial LC gates across its divisions. This system ensures that the gates operate in complete synchronization with approaching trains, guaranteeing smooth and safe crossings. Moreover, 29 Sliding Boom Barriers have been introduced at LC gates across various divisions, providing an additional layer of safety.

To further enhance infrastructure and ensure safer crossings, Rubberised Surfacing is being introduced at 15 LC gates in the Lumding Division. This upgrade will reduce the risk of vehicle skidding and improve the overall road-track interface.

“The Northeast Frontier Railway remains deeply committed to safeguarding lives and upholding the highest standards of operational safety,” emphasized the CPRO. “These initiatives reflect NFR’s dedicated efforts to modernise infrastructure, enhance security and provide a secure, seamless and comfortable travel experience for all passengers.”
