New Roster in SC from July 3: PILs to Be Heard by CJI & Two Senior Most Judges

New Delhi, 1st July. The Supreme Court has issued a new work roster under which Public Interest Litigations (PILs) will be heard by the Chief Justice of India and two other senior most judges of the court beginning Monday.

This means that the PILs will be heard by benches led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, as well as Justices S K Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna.

According to the SC Registry, the “roster of the work for new cases notified under the order of the…Chief Justice of India” would go into effect on July 3, 2023. The CJI’s bench will also hear cases involving social justice, written petitions, and the appointment of constitutional functionaries, in addition to cases involving a wide range of other topics.

The first three benches, as well as the fourth most senior judge, Justice B R Gavai, will hear contempt of court cases. Habeas corpus petitions will be heard by benches led by the CJI and Justice Surya Kant.

Election cases will be handled by the CJI bench as well as the benches of Justices Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose.
