New Delhi, 18th June. The Post Office Act 2023, which aims to streamline postal services and enhance citizen-centric benefits, comes into effect from today. The bill, introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023, was subsequently passed by both houses of Parliament and received the assent of the President on December 24, 2023.

The Act abolishes the exclusive privilege of collecting, processing, and delivering letters, aiming to improve business operations and public convenience. It establishes a framework for delivering citizen-centric services, banking facilities, and government scheme benefits directly to the last mile.

No penal provisions are included in the Act, focusing instead on setting standards for item addressing, address identifiers, and the use of postcodes to streamline postal operations.

Notification no. S.O. 2352€, dated June 17, 2024, officially brings the Post Office Act 2023 into force, marking a significant update as it repeals the Indian Post Office Act of 1898.
