New Delhi, 12th August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified crop varieties at the India Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. The initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability in India.
During the event, PM Modi interacted with farmers and scientists, highlighting the critical role of value addition in agriculture. He emphasized that these newly developed crop varieties are expected to be highly beneficial for farmers, reducing their costs and positively impacting the environment.
The Prime Minister also discussed the growing importance of millets and the shift towards more nutritious diets. He underscored the benefits of natural farming and the increasing consumer demand for organic foods. Farmers at the event expressed their appreciation for the government’s efforts in promoting natural farming practices and lauded the contributions of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in raising awareness. PM Modi urged KVKs to proactively educate farmers about the benefits of these new crop varieties, enhancing their understanding of the potential advantages.
PM Modi commended the scientists for their dedication in developing these innovative crop varieties, noting that they have aligned their research with his suggestions to bring underutilized crops into the mainstream. The 109 varieties released today include 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops, covering a diverse range of cereals, millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, fibre, fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants.
This development is expected to significantly boost agricultural resilience and productivity, contributing to the long-term sustainability of India’s farming sector.
