New Delhi, 17th August. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Friday approved the refurbishment of all road signages in its area and plans to partner with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) for technical guidance on road maintenance. NDMC Vice-Chairman Satish Upadhyay said several infrastructure proposals, including these, were cleared during the council meeting.
The council also approved the New Delhi Municipal Council Plastic Waste Management Bye-laws 2024, which will soon be notified in the gazette. The draft was open for public comments earlier this year, but no significant feedback was received.
Upadhyay highlighted that the existing road signages, installed during 2009-2010 in line with IRC 67:2001 standards, are outdated and incompatible with the latest IRC 67:2022 guidelines. The new signages will meet urban-specific standards, including color, font, size, and reflective sheet type based on traffic speed and area sensitivity. NDMC plans to replace 6,439 signages and add 80 new ones at a cost of Rs 18.07 crore. A third-party agency will be appointed to execute this project.
The council also agreed to a Memorandum of Agreement with CRRI to ensure proper maintenance of NDMC roads using visual condition surveys and road roughness measurements. One focus is on the deteriorating road of North West Moti Bagh, which was last resurfaced in 2013.
NDMC Member Kuljeet Singh Chahal added that the council approved the reconstruction of 39 roads at an estimated cost of Rs 4.96 crore. These include Sudhir Tyagi Marg, A Block Palika Bhawan to Ring Road, and Guru Gobind Singh Marg, among others.
Additionally, the council approved the installation of 8,000 energy-efficient LED street lights, integrated with the Command and Control Centre, to improve street lighting.
Chahal also discussed the redevelopment of Shivaji Stadium in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, with plans being presented during the meeting.
