New Delhi, 28th August. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured the majority mark in the Rajya Sabha as nine BJP members and two from its allies were elected unopposed in recent by-polls. This development raises the BJP’s strength in the upper house to 96, bringing the NDA’s total to 112.
The newly elected members include representatives from BJP allies—the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Rashtriya Lok Manch (RLM). The NDA’s majority will make the passage of contentious bills easier, reducing the need to rely on non-aligned parties like BJD and YSR Congress.
In the opposition camp, one Congress member, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, was also elected unopposed from Telangana, increasing the opposition’s strength to 85. With the Rajya Sabha currently holding 237 members, the majority mark stands at 119.
The elected BJP members include Mission Ranjan Dass and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Kumar Mishra from Bihar, Kiran Choudhary from Haryana, George Kurien from Madhya Pradesh, Dhirya Sheel Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha, Ravneet Singh Bittu from Rajasthan, and Rajeev Bhattacharjee from Tripura. The NCP’s Nitin Patil and RLM’s Upendra Kushwaha were also elected from Maharashtra and Bihar, respectively.
This majority is significant for the NDA, as it has long sought control over the Rajya Sabha to ensure the smooth passage of its legislative agenda, which had previously been hampered by the opposition’s larger numbers.
