Shillong, 23rd Jan. In the run-up to the February 27 Assembly elections, a lone Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator resigned from the Assembly and the party on Monday before joining the opposition, Congress.
In the last two months, 19 Meghalaya MLAs have resigned from the Assembly and their respective parties and joined various other parties.
NCP MLA Saleng Sangma, a senior politician in the northeastern state, has submitted his resignation letter to Meghalaya Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons.
Sangma was elected to the Assembly in 2018 from the West Garo Hills district’s Gambegre constituency.
Twelve MLAs, led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma (2010-2018), who were elected as Congress nominees in the 2018 Assembly election, joined the Trinamool Congress in November 2021, transforming the West Bengal-based party into the state’s main opposition overnight.
The Congress won 21 seats in the 60-member Assembly in the 2018 Assembly elections, but all of its legislators later joined other parties, including the Trinamool and the ruling NPP.
So far, five Trinamool MLAs have left the party to join other parties.
