New Delhi, 22nd Sept. The Cabinet approved the national logistics policy on Wednesday, with the goal of lowering transportation costs and improving the sector’s overall performance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the policy last week, which aims to reduce transportation costs by promoting the seamless movement of goods across the country.
The prime minister stated during the policy’s launch that “from 13-14 per cent (of the GDP), we should all aim to bring the logistics cost to single-digit as soon as possible”.
According to an official statement, the policy aims to reduce logistics costs in India to levels comparable to global benchmarks by 2030; raise India’s ranking in the Logistics Performance Index from 44th in 2018; and develop a data-driven decision support mechanism for an efficient logistics ecosystem.
Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, told reporters during a policy briefing that India’s goal is to be among the top 25 countries by 2030.
It also stated that the policy will use the existing institutional framework – the Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) established under the PM Gati Shakti national master plan – to monitor its implementation.
The EGoS will also establish a Services Improvement Group, similar to a network planning group, to monitor parameters related to process, regulatory, and digital improvements in the logistics sector.
The emphasis will also be on enabling adequate warehouse development, standardization, digitization and automation across the logistics value chain, and improved track and trace mechanisms.
The policy’s key initiatives include the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), the Ease of Logistics Services platform, and an e-handbook on warehousing.
Fourteen states have already developed their respective logistics policies, while 13 are still in the planning stages.
“This is expected to reduce logistics cost to achieve global benchmarks and improve the country’s Logistics Performance Index ranking and its global positioning,” it added.
Arshdeep Singh Mundi, Managing Director of Jujhar Logistics, remarked on the policy, saying that it is a significant step toward strengthening the logistics sector through the integration of efficient measures.
