Nanded, 20th Nov.
Voting for the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll began on a subdued note, with 6.03% voter turnout recorded by 9 am, according to election officials. The polling commenced at 7 am and will continue until 6 pm.
The bypoll sees a direct contest between Congress’s Ravindra Chavan and BJP’s Santukrao Hambarde. Ravindra Chavan, son of the late Congress MP Vasant Chavan, is contesting to retain the seat following his father’s death on August 26.
The Nanded Lok Sabha seat has witnessed shifting political dynamics over the years. In the 2019 general elections, BJP’s Pratap Patil Chikhalikar defeated Congress veteran Ashok Chavan. However, in 2024, Vasant Chavan reclaimed the seat for the Congress, defeating Chikhalikar by over 59,000 votes.
Adding to the political reshuffle, Ashok Chavan joined the BJP earlier this year, while Pratap Patil Chikhalikar moved to the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP and is contesting the assembly election from Loha, a constituency he has previously represented twice.
