Rajgir, 19th June. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University at Rajgir, Bihar, marking a significant milestone in India’s educational landscape. The ceremony, attended by dignitaries from 17 countries and senior officials, underscored Nalanda’s role as a symbol of India’s rich academic heritage and cultural exchange.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi described Nalanda as more than just a historical name, emphasizing its identity and honor that transcends time. He hailed the inauguration as the dawn of a new golden age for India, symbolizing a renaissance not only for India but for global educational heritage.
Highlighting the international collaboration behind the project, the Prime Minister noted Nalanda’s significance in the cultural and educational histories of Asia and beyond. He praised Bihar’s resilience in reclaiming Nalanda’s glory, which reflects India’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental progress.
The new campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities including academic blocks, auditoriums, student hostels, and eco-friendly infrastructure. Designed as a ‘Net Zero’ Green Campus, it embodies India’s commitment to sustainability with solar energy, water treatment plants, and extensive water bodies.
Prime Minister Modi articulated his vision for India to become a global hub of education and knowledge, fostering a comprehensive skilling system and advanced research-oriented higher education. He highlighted India’s strides in education reforms and global rankings, pointing out the rapid expansion of educational institutions across the country.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that Nalanda University would emerge as a pivotal center for global causes, guiding humanity with its rich repository of knowledge and values.
Governor of Bihar Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar, and other dignitaries graced the occasion, underscoring the significance of Nalanda’s revival in the contemporary world.
Background:
Nalanda University, founded around 1600 years ago, was among the world’s first residential universities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016. The new campus integrates historical legacy with modern infrastructure, positioning itself as a beacon of educational excellence and sustainability.
