Nagaland to Set Up Early Warning System for Better Disaster Preparedness

Kohima– In a significant move towards strengthening disaster preparedness, Nagaland will be equipped with an Early Warning System (EWS) that will issue timely warnings for different natural disasters. The project aimed at improving the state’s disaster response has gained immediate backing from Union Minister of State for Ministry of Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh, on a request made by Rajya Sabha member Phangnon Konyak.

Konyak, who has been pressing for better disaster management in the state, thanked the Union Ministry for the prompt approval and support. She pointed out that the EWS would be essential for the state, considering its susceptibility to various natural disasters. “This system will not only enhance our preparedness but also boost our capability for quick response and disaster mitigation,” Konyak stated.

The Early Warning System will be developed to give early warnings for a variety of natural phenomena, such as earthquakes, severe weather conditions like heatwaves and coldwaves, heavy rainfall, and floods. The system will also give warnings for lightning, thunderstorms, and landslides. Through real-time alerts, the EWS will enable authorities, communities, and individuals to take anticipatory action, minimizing loss of life and property in the case of natural disasters.

Nagaland, located in the easternmost region of India, is susceptible to many natural disasters because of its location, with frequent landslides, monsoon flooding, and the potential for earthquakes. The implementation of the EWS will greatly enhance the state’s disaster response abilities, protecting citizens better against bad weather and geologic events. The state government is likely to work with concerned authorities to make the system smooth in its operation across vulnerable parts of Nagaland. The officials are hopeful that this action will not only save lives but also raise public awareness and make the community more resilient.

With the go-ahead for the system in place, Nagaland is poised to become a model state for disaster readiness, an example of how early action and technology can reduce the devastating impact of natural disasters.
