Basti, 20th Jan. A 34-year-old man from Basti, Uttar Pradesh, converted to Hinduism and changed his name to Shivshankar in order to marry his long-time girlfriend, with whom he had been in a relationship for the past decade. The couple’s decision came after a police case was filed by the woman, accusing Saddam of rape, forcing her to undergo an abortion, and threatening to kill her.
The incident, which had initially raised concerns due to the serious nature of the accusations, took a turn when the woman and Saddam, a resident of Nagar Bazaar, both decided to marry willingly. The couple’s love story, which had spanned over ten years, was complicated by their different religious backgrounds, making marriage a challenge.
According to SHO Devendra Singh of Kotwali Police Station, the woman had approached the authorities three days ago, seeking justice. In her complaint, she accused Saddam and his family of various offenses, including sexual assault and coercing her into terminating a pregnancy. Based on her statement, the police had registered a case and initiated an investigation. However, the situation evolved when both individuals expressed their desire to marry, independently of any external pressure.
On Sunday night, the couple married in a temple in the city market, following Hindu rituals. Saddam, who had been known as Saddam Hussain, adopted the name Shivshankar Soni as part of his conversion to Hinduism. The two exchanged vows and took seven rounds, signifying their commitment to spending their lives together.
The couple stated that their decision to marry was a personal one, made after years of mutual affection and understanding. Despite the complexities surrounding their relationship, both Saddam and his girlfriend insisted that they had chosen this path of their own accord, leaving behind the earlier legal complications.
The police confirmed that the case was still under investigation, but the couple’s marriage, which they described as the result of a decade-long relationship, marked the resolution of their personal dispute.
