Mumbai, 6th Feb. The Mumbai Police conducted an identification parade for Shariful Islam Shehzad, the accused in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, at Arthur Road Jail on Wednesday, officials said. Witnesses present during the attack identified Shehzad, who allegedly entered the actor’s residence intending to commit theft.
According to police, strong evidence links Shehzad to the crime, including CCTV footage and a positive facial recognition test. Saif Ali Khan was stabbed last month during a violent confrontation with the intruder. He sustained injuries to his thoracic spine and was treated at Lilavati Hospital.
The identification parade, held in the office of the Senior Jailor at Arthur Road Jail, was conducted in the presence of a Tehsildar following court approval. Staff nurse Ariyama Philip and aaya Junu, who were inside Saif’s residence during the attack, participated in identifying the accused.
On January 31, Mumbai Police confirmed that Shehzad’s facial recognition test matched the suspect seen in CCTV footage. Additional Commissioner of Police Paramjit Singh Dahiya dismissed speculation regarding mismatched fingerprints, stating that police had substantial oral, physical, and technical evidence.
The investigation revealed that Shehzad, originally from Bangladesh, entered India and lived in Kolkata before arriving in Mumbai. Police arrested him in Thane while he was allegedly planning to flee to Bangladesh.
A case has been registered under sections 311, 312, 331(4), 331(6), and 331(7) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). However, Shehzad’s advocate, Sandeep Shekhane, denied the police’s claims, stating that his client had been living in Mumbai for over seven years with his family. He alleged a lack of proper investigation and questioned the police’s claim about Shehzad’s nationality.
Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan was discharged from Lilavati Hospital on January 21 after undergoing surgery. Upon returning to his Bandra residence, he briefly greeted the media.
