New Delhi- Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah has reiterated the Modi government’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking, emphasizing that those who exploit youth for monetary greed will face severe consequences.
In a post on the X platform, Shah highlighted the government’s determination to continue its fight against narcotics with ruthless and meticulous investigations, aiming to build a “drug-free Bharat.” He credited the success to the “bottom-to-top” and “top-to-bottom” investigation strategy, which recently led to the conviction of 29 drug traffickers across India in 12 different cases.
Convictions Across Multiple Zones
Under the Modi government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has played a pivotal role in dismantling drug networks. The following convictions highlight the agency’s relentless efforts:
Ahmedabad Zone:
- Three individuals were convicted for trafficking 23.859 kg of Charas in Gujarat. The court sentenced them to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh each.
Bhopal Zone (Mandsaur):
- Four individuals were sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹2 lakh each for smuggling 123.080 kg of Ganja.
Chandigarh Zone:
- Two individuals were convicted for attempting to smuggle 438 grams of opium in hockey sticks to Canada. The court sentenced them to 3 years of rigorous imprisonment.
- Another individual was sentenced to 6 months in jail for possession of 390 grams of Charas.
Cochin Zone:
- A Zimbabwean national was convicted for attempting to smuggle 2.910 kg of heroin into India and sentenced to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹3 lakh.
Dehradun Zone:
- Two individuals were convicted for possession of 450 grams of Charas, with one sentenced to 1-year rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹20,000.
Delhi Zone:
- Two individuals were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1 lakh each for trafficking 1.950 kg of Charas.
Hyderabad Zone:
- Eight individuals were convicted for smuggling 681.8 kg of Ganja and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹1 lakh each.
Indore Zone:
- Four individuals were sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1 lakh each for trafficking 152.665 kg of Ganja.
Kolkata Zone:
- Two individuals were convicted for smuggling 1301 kg of Ganja and sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹1 lakh each.
Lucknow Zone:
- A trafficker was convicted for smuggling 3.1 kg of Charas and sentenced to 15 years in prison with a ₹1.5 lakh fine.
- Another trafficker was sentenced to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment with a ₹1 lakh fine for attempting to smuggle 8 kg of opium.
These convictions reflect the NCB’s dedication to ensuring successful prosecutions and strengthening the legal framework against drug-related offenses.

The Home Minister emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government remains resolute in its fight against drug trafficking. The NCB, guided by Amit Shah, continues to work relentlessly to realize the vision of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” by 2047.
