WASHINGTON – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met World Trade Organization Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, where they discussed global trade challenges and areas of cooperation.
“Interacted with Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg,” Modi said in a post on X, highlighted the engagement.
The meeting underscored India’s commitment to multilateralism and cooperation on global trade issues. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has been a strong advocate for WTO reforms and for promoting inclusive global trade.
The discussion assumes significance as India continues to push for reforms within the WTO to make the institution more representative and responsive to the needs of developing countries.
The meeting came at a time when global trade is grappling with challenges such as protectionism and rising tariffs. India and the WTO are working together to promote free and fair trade and to support economic growth in developing nations.
