New Delhi, 14th Dec. Millet has the potential to revolutionize our approach to agriculture, climate, and food security, said Arjun Munda, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Tribal Affairs on Thursday.
Munda inaugurated the ASEAN-India Millet Festival in New Delhi, along with other government officials.
The festival aims to raise awareness and create a larger market for millet and millet-based products, in line with the International Year of Millets.
During the festival, Munda highlighted government policies and market innovations to promote the production and consumption of grains.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India’s proactive progress in placing food at the forefront of the global agenda.
Munda also mentioned that millet is not only culturally significant but also offers sustainable solutions to current concerns.
He highlighted the ability of millet to address Sustainable Development Goals and its potential to thrive in diverse environments with minimal resources.
Adopting millet in the diet promotes sustainable agricultural practices and ensures a healthier future. Millet is known for its minimal water requirements, low carbon footprint, and ability to thrive in drought conditions. It also offers an alternative food system for increasing demand for vegetarian and gluten-free food.
The Indian government has launched campaigns to position millet as a solution to malnutrition, climate change, and sustainable farming practices.
The Ministry of Agriculture is actively implementing the Millets Sub-Mission under the National Food Security Mission to promote millets and meet the increasing demand. Several State Millet Missions and Projects have been launched to support millet cultivation.
The International Year of Millets has raised awareness and increased consumption of millet through impactful initiatives and commitments.
Millet has the potential to transform agriculture, address global challenges, and promote sustainable practices, making it a promising source of food for a sustainable future.
