Guwahati, 2nd Dec. The Science & Technology (S&T) and Communicators Conclave, a key event of the India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024, was inaugurated today by Dr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, National Organising Secretary of Vijnana Bharati, alongside Dr. Manoj Kumar Patairiya, former Director of CSIR-NISCAIR, and Dr. K. Ramesha, Director of CSIR-CECRI. The IISF, India’s largest science festival, is being held at IIT Guwahati from November 30 to December 3, 2024.

The conclave emphasized the role of media in translating scientific research into accessible knowledge for the public. Dr. Ramesha highlighted the need for creative communication to simplify complex scientific findings. “Media is the key to bridging the gap between research and the public,” he said.

Dr. Patairiya underscored the shared methodologies of science and journalism, emphasizing analysis, experimentation, and verification as common principles. Dr. Sharma called for innovative approaches to communicate science effectively, aiming to demystify complex ideas for wider audiences.

The event also featured the release of the Employment News periodical and Science India magazine. Panels addressed regional dissemination of S&T in North-East India, with participation from experts like Dr. Arup Misra, Chairman of Assam’s Pollution Control Board, and science communicators from across the region.

A highlight was the lecture by Dr. Yelloji Rao Mirajkar on “Aahaar Kranti,” advocating a shift from focusing solely on food quantity to ensuring balanced, nutritious diets based on traditional Indian practices.

The conclave concluded with sessions on S&T coverage in media, science-based feature films, and interactive Q&A sessions, fostering collaboration between scientists, media professionals, and students.
