Mayawati Urges UP Govt to Ensure Fairness in Teacher Recruitment

Lucknow, 10th Sept. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has called on the Uttar Pradesh government to maintain transparency and fairness in the ongoing teacher recruitment process, particularly concerning reserved category candidates. Her remarks came after the Supreme Court stayed an Allahabad High Court order that had mandated a fresh selection list for 69,000 assistant teacher positions in the state.

On Monday, the Supreme Court temporarily halted the High Court’s verdict, which had invalidated the state’s previous selection lists issued in June 2020 and January 2022. The High Court’s order had been in response to complaints about the reservation formula used in the recruitment process.

Mayawati emphasized the need for the Uttar Pradesh government to uphold the constitutional rights of reserved category candidates and ensure they are not disadvantaged. In a statement posted in Hindi on X, she urged the state government to adopt an “honest stand” on the issue to prevent any injustice.

The Supreme Court’s bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Justice J B Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra, also issued notices to the state government and other relevant authorities, including the secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board, following a plea by Ravi Kumar Saxena and 51 others.

The Allahabad High Court had originally directed the state to prepare a new selection list in August after disposing of 90 special appeals, which challenged a single-judge order from March 13 of the previous year. The stay by the Supreme Court has put the High Court’s directive on hold, pending further proceedings.
